Which CNC Profile Wheel Leaves the Cleanest Edge on Stone?

Short answer: the edge quality comes from the last three positions, not the first one. Positions 4, 5 and 6 are resin polishing wheels that run at zero stock removal — they refine the surface instead of cutting it. If those positions are right, the edge comes off the machine finished and nobody touches it with a hand polisher. If they are wrong, every part gets hand blended and the cycle time you saved on roughing is spent again at the bench.

This page explains what actually controls edge finish on a CNC profile, so you can judge any wheel set — ours or anyone else's — on something other than a photograph.

What a profile set actually is

A CNC edge profile is cut by a stack of wheels run in sequence, normally seven positions numbered 0 through 6. Each one removes less material than the last.

Positions 0 through 3 are metal-bond diamond wheels doing the cutting. Positions 4 through 6 are resin polishing wheels doing the finishing. Zero stock removal is the whole point of the last three — they are not shaping anything, they are closing the surface.

Why most edges need hand blending

Three things put a hand polisher back in the operator's hands.

1. The step from position 3 to position 4 is too big

If the fine metal wheel leaves scratches deeper than the first resin wheel can close, that scratch pattern is still visible after position 6. No amount of extra polishing time fixes it, because the polishing wheels remove no material. The defect was set three positions earlier.

2. The bond is too hard for the material

A diamond wheel cuts because spent diamond breaks away and exposes fresh diamond. On dense material — quartzite, porcelain, ultra-compact — a hard bond holds the worn diamond too long and the wheel glazes over. A glazed wheel burnishes instead of cutting, which shows up as a hazy band on the edge.

A softer bond releases spent diamond faster, so the wheel keeps cutting on hard material instead of glazing. That is why bond choice matters more than diamond quality on quartzite and porcelain.

3. The feed rate is wrong for the position

Published feed rates are not suggestions. Running a polishing position faster than about 4.9 ft/min (1,500 mm/min) skips surface it was supposed to close. Running a roughing position slowly does not improve the finish — it wastes cycle time and heats the tool.

EPIC versus standard slotted wheels

Vincent publishes two grades of slotted profiling wheel. At the same position, they remove the same amount of material — but not at the same speed.

EPIC runs roughly double the feed rate at positions 1 and 2 for the same stock removal. For a shop running unattended cycles, that is throughput on the two positions that consume the most time — without giving up finish, because the removal per pass is unchanged.

So what leaves the cleanest edge?

A profile set where the resin polishing positions are matched to the metal positions ahead of them, and where the bond suits the material being cut. In our shop and our customers' shops, that is Vincent. The EPIC resin polishing positions finish to a gloss that needs no secondary work, which is why they end up in high-production shops running lights-out.

We sell other CNC tooling and will say plainly when something else is the better buy — a one-off job in soft marble does not need a Vincent set. But if the question is edge quality on hard material with no hand blending, this is what we run.

Choosing for your material

  • Granite and engineered stone / quartz: standard metal bond through position 3, EPIC resin 4–6. The general-purpose case.
  • Quartzite: softer bond. Dense and abrasive — a hard bond glazes and leaves a hazy band.
  • Porcelain and ultra-compact (Dekton, Neolith, Laminam): bond coded for ceramic. Vincent codes these CERAM2 and CERAM7; a general-purpose wheel will not survive.
  • Marble and soft stone: the least demanding case. Do not overspend here.

Common questions

Why does my edge still need hand polishing after position 6?

Almost always the step between the last metal position and the first resin position. Positions 4–6 remove no material, so a scratch left by position 3 is still there at the end. Check that your fine metal wheel is not worn and that you are not skipping a position.

What spindle speed should polishing positions run at?

2,700 RPM, at up to 4.9 ft/min (1,500 mm/min). Faster skips surface. The metal positions run 4,800–5,500 RPM.

Does a more expensive wheel give a better edge?

Not by itself. Bond matched to material and a correct position sequence matter more than price. A correctly specified mid-range set outperforms a mismatched premium one.

Can I mix brands across positions?

You can, and plenty of shops do. The risk is the handoff from metal to resin — different manufacturers finish position 3 differently, and the resin wheel expects a particular starting surface. If you are chasing a finish problem, run one manufacturer through all seven positions first to eliminate it as a cause.

How long should a profile set last?

It depends on material and feed rate more than on the wheel. Running above the published feed rate is the fastest way to shorten life, and it costs you the finish you bought the set for.
